Resources for the Cruising Life

Our trusted apps, books, gear, and galley essentials that make voyaging simpler, safer, and more enjoyable.

Over nearly two decades of voyaging, we’ve tested countless tools, books, and bits of gear. Some turned out to be fads, others have earned a permanent place aboard Wanderlust. This page gathers the resources we actually use — the ones that have proven their worth at sea and at anchor. From navigation apps and seamanship references to galley favorites and foul-weather gear, these are the essentials that make life afloat simpler, safer, and more enjoyable.

Apps & Digital Tools

The right apps can make voyaging smoother, safer, and more informed. Over the years we’ve tested dozens for navigation, weather, and offshore communication. These are the ones that have earned a permanent spot on our devices — whether it’s routing a passage, checking tides, or staying connected far offshore.

Books & References

Sailing is part skill, part mindset. Books have always been where we’ve turned for both — from seamanship manuals that keep us sharp to memoirs that remind us why we cast off in the first place. This collection blends the practical with the inspiring: the volumes we keep aboard and return to often.

Galley Essentials

Life afloat is better with good meals, but a boat galley asks for gear that’s compact, durable, and versatile. These tools and gadgets have passed the test of daily use on Wanderlust, helping us cook well even at sea. From pressure cookers to coffee kits, they’re the small comforts that make long passages more enjoyable.

A stainless steel pressure cooker with a digital display, control knobs, and a secure lid, designed for versatile cooking options.$$

Breville Fast Slow Pro Pressure Cooker

Amazon

We use this versatile pressure cooker/slow cooker almost daily. We have it bungeed to the galley counter so we can use it under way.

Why we use it

This versatile appliance enables us to make many different types of meals with one appliance and, to do so with solar/battery power rather than using propane which can be hard to find in remote locations.

The locking lid means we can use it while underway, as well.

Pros

  • combines slow cooker and pressure cooker into one appliance
  • locking lid so it can be used while underway
  • saute, sear, and reduce modes enable one-pot meals

Cons

  • more expensive than other similar appliances
  • consumes ~1200 Watts in some modes

Personal Gear

Comfort and safety depend on the gear you wear and carry. Foul-weather gear that stays dry, headlamps that last all night, harnesses you trust — these aren’t just accessories, they’re lifelines. Here’s what we rely on to stay safe, warm, and functional when conditions get tough.

Boat Gear & Systems

Every boat is different, but some pieces of equipment are universal for passagemaking: anchors that set first time, watermakers that keep you self-sufficient, safety gear that’s ready when needed. This section covers the systems and hardware that have proven their worth on Wanderlust and would make sense on any serious cruising boat.
